Mets May Lose K-Rod For the Season, Win Game 3-1

According to Metsblog, here, K-Rod is likely gone for the season as he will have surgery on a torn ligament in his thumb which he sustained during the circus last week.  Way to go, K-Rod.  This MAY be the dumbest thing I've heard in some time.  Also according to Metsblog, the team is looking into their options with K-Rod, presumably looking to void his contract due to a non-baseball related injury.  There is something funny about that phrase "non-baseball related injury"...BUT none of this will matter as Cerrone points out the Baseball Players Union is a tough opponent to take down...

As for things that happen on the field...

Tonight the Mets got a great start from Jon Niese and fought hard to take the first of four from the Astros in Houston, 3-1 (box score).  The new Mets closer, Takahashi, came in and went 1-2-3 in the ninth to secure his first major league save.  Will he be the closer for the rest of the season?  Who knows?  But for now, it looks like he's the guy in the ninth.

The Mets got back to .500 on the season behind a homer from Carlos Beltran and a triple from Frenchy.  Also, Jon Niese was awesome going 7 innings giving up only 1 run on 7 hits while striking out 5.  Unfortunately for Niese, the Mets had only scored one run for him and waited until the ninth to take the lead for good.  Niese deserved the win...but I guess beggars can't be choosers...

Tomorrow the Mets look to move back above .500 as they send Johan to the hill to face old friend Nelson Figueroa.

Mets lose 6-2 tonight at Citi Field...

Recap/Reaction:Just when it looks like a ray of hope is desperately trying to peak through Citi Field, the Mets find a way to squash it. Tonight Jon Niese pitched a gem, allowing one run through 7 solid innings. When Niese left the game, it looked as if the Mets would win back to back games, for the first time in 40 games. That was not the case.

The wheels fell off in the 8th as Takahashi allowed two runners to reach base, and an intentional walk brought up Melvin Mora. Acosta had Mora 2-2 before hanging a slider that the former Met destroyed.

Acosta had been solid leading up to this outing, same with Takahshi in the 8th inning roll but it just looks like Jerry has such little stability in the pen.

Another negative is the offense which was MIA. David Wright is lost. Carlos Beltran looks old. Mets had 3 hits all night, one of which was a 2-run shot by Pagan in the 1st that supplied the Mets only runs.

Bottom line was tonight the Mets had a chance to take a series and set themselves up tomorrow to sweep with their ace on the mound. Yet, the Mets keeping digging a bigger hole, now 9.5 GB of Hotlanta.

A series win over a team in front of you in the wild card standings is never a bad thing...not that I have any hopes for the playoffs...I'm just sayin'.

Mets Find Stroke Against Wainwright, Beat Cards 8-2

Last night the Mets bats woke up, against an unexpected foe, as the Mets picked up a game on the Braves and beat the Cardinals 8-2 in the Citi (wrap/boxscore).

After a road trip where the Mets couldn't hit or drive in runs, they came home to face one of the NL's best pitchers in Adam Wainwright and predictably...pounded him?  What?  I really have no idea where this offense outpouring came from but I am very happy it came.  Especially after hearing yesterday that the Mets may not be buyers this trade deadline, this was well timed.  This team NEEDS to be in on the division race, and cannot give up yet, this year.  A nice win streak might convince ownership to re-visit some deals that could give the team an edge, because there is still plenty of time, and Mets fans WANT something to root for...

At the dish the Mets got homers from Reyes and Francoeur (playing because of Bay's concussion), along with RBI for Wright, Beltran and Davis to help the team beat up on Cy Young candidate Adam Wainwright.  Unreal...

And on the bump...Niese went 6 innings giving up only one earned run on 7 hits.  Acosta, Valdez and K-Rod finished up the game, which was basically decided by the time these guys came in.

Bottomline, the Mets had a good night, but need to follow it up tonight with another good performance. They face Jaime Garcia tonight at 7:10, when they sent Santana to the hill.

Mets Look to Score a Run, Win a Game, in San Fran Tonight at 9:05

Barry Zito was awesome last night, as was Jon Niese, but the Mets still cannot seem to muster any offense against this great Giants staff.  Tonight will be another test when they send Takahashi to the hill against Matt Cain.  The game will start at 9:05 and will be on SNY.  Since Reyes is still out, and the Mets are facing a righty, here is tonight's line up as reported by the Mets on twitter:

Niese Pitches Well But Arroyo Has Mets Number as Reds Win 3-1

Tonight Niese made only a few mistakes, but infortunately two of them were against Brandon Phillips who made Niese pay by driving in two runs and leading the Reds to a 3-1 win tonight (box score/wrap), and a series win.

Bronson Arroyo killed the Mets yet again tonight, going 8 innings, scattering 7 hits and giving up only a solo homer to Angel Pagan.  The Mets had chances tonight, but just couldn't get things done, especially in the 8th and 9th innings, when they had opportunities with the tying run (at least) at the plate.

Pagan and Thole both had two hit nights for the Mets but it just wasn't enough.  The offense just didn't get it done tonight and as well as Niese pitched, it just wasn't enough.  Niese went 7 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs while striking out eight.  Niese continues to look good this year, and has proven that he can be a valuable and successful piece to this pitching staff throughout the season.  But as well as Niese threw tonight, and has been all year, tonight he was just out-done by Arroyo.  It happens...

The Mets have a day off tomorrow before starting a big three game set with the Braves this weekend.  After this series the Mets can be tied with the Braves for first, 6 games back, or anywhere in between.  This is an important series for confidence considering how early in the season it is, and the way it's timed against the All-Star break.

Jerry's been looking for ways to get Thole in there and facing a righty starter tonight is a great opportunity.  I'm not wild about sitting Frenchy for Feliciano, but I guess he needs the night off despite the day off tomorrow and the up-coming All-Star break. I really hope that's not the logic there.  It's more likely that it's a righty/lefty thing for Jerry, he loves that stuff.  Also getting the night off is Tejada, once again a victim of righty/lefty match ups.  


Let's see a good one out of Niese tonight, this would be a nice win heading into the weekend against the Braves...

Late Postgame Friday

Last night in Washington, the Mets held off the Nats as Jon Niese went seven strong and gave up only one run. Niese has been the savior of this team, really stepping up when the Mets need a victory. This was definetly a big win, coming off of a loss thursday and the debacle in San Juan. Niese threw a career high 117 pitchers and stuck out eight.

One again we saw another dicey K-Rod outing as he let up two runs on two hits before picking off Bernadina at second to end the game.

David Wright stayed hot, smacking 3 hits and Alex Cora came up huge with a three run triple.

Mets split the first two games of this series and it would be a huge confidence booster to win today vs. God (Strasburg) going up against a guy who's completely opposite stuff (Dickey). Knuckler vs. the Ultimate Flamerthrower, Mets get their first taste of the chosen one this year. Game is 4:30 on Fox.

Pagan is back in the line up, as is Jason Bay, which should help spark the Mets offense.  Unfortunately the team's true spark plug Reyes is out again, but SHOULD be back tomorrow.  The bottomline is the Mets need to take control of games, as they've had the the games taken to them so far on this road trip.  A nice big top of the first, followed by a goose egg from Niese would be the perfect medicine for that...

Johan Pitches Well, But Nats Are Walk Off Winners Over Mets 2-1

And so it goes for Johan Santana in New York...

Johan was awesome last night, but the Mets line up was unable to muster more than 1 run off of Livan Hernandez and the Nats defeated the Mets 2-1 in walk-off fashion (box score/wrap).

It is really unbelievable how jinxed Johan is in New York.  The guy cannot buy a win, even when he pitches 7 innings giving up only 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 7.  It's gotten to a point for me where if Johan pitches well, I am actually MORE concerned about the team's ability to win that game.  When Johan gets hit, the team usually finds a way to fight back and make things interesting, but not when he pitches well.  Then the team finds a way to make errors, or not hit, and leave Johan hanging there.  It's very frustrating to watch, and I'm sure even more frustrating if you're Johan...

Although the team had 8 hits on the night, they were unable to push in more than one run, which Ike drove in with a first inning RBI single.  They did have a sort of make-shift line up last night, and hopefully Reyes, Pagan and Bay will all return to the line up tonight and that will kick-start the offense.   But there is one thing that needs to be asked...

HOW THE HELL DOES LIVAN HERNANDEZ HAVE AN ERA UNDER 3.00? 

But I digress...

Despite the Mets success on their previous road trip they are currently 1-3 on this one, and their overall road troubles don't seem to have gone away.  The more concerning thing about this road trip is that they're facing the Marlins and Nationals, two divisional rivals, who the Mets have NOT been able to handle this season.  Put those two together and you have some serious reason for concern...

But the Mets send Jon Niese tonight to try to even up this current four game set with the Nats.  Luis Atilano will throw for Washington tonight at 7:05.  The game will air on SNY...

Mets Go Deep, Beat Twins 6-0 To Take the Series

David Wright, Jeff Francoeur and Ike Davis powered the Mets to a 6-0 victory behind some great pitching from Niese and the bullpen (wrap/box score). 

Today was a total team effort, great pitching and some good hitting as well.  Francoeur, Feliciano and Wright all had three hits for the Mets.  Ike Davis also brought it today, going 2-4 with the homer and 2 runs scored. 

On the hill, Niese was great going 6 innings and giving up only 4 hits and 3 walks.  The bullpen also got the job done tossing 3 scoreless innings after Niese left the game. 

Today was a great day on the field for the Mets, but not a great day off it.  Both Jenrry Mejia and Angel Pagan are injured, as Mejia went down today with shoulder stiffness, as relayed here.  Meanwhile, Angel Pagan continues to be out with some muscle issues on his side.  Originally expected to be back tomorrow, Metsblog is reporting it'll probably be another few days.

Tomorrow the Mets head to Puerto Rico to take on the Marlins.  Game one features R.A. Dickey against Ricky Nolasco at 7:10.  The team just needs to keep winning series, and what a better way to start than taking the first of three tomorrow night...

It's Raining Hits, And...Uh...Rain, As Mets Pound Tigers 14-6

Last night the Mets pounded out 16 hits against the Tigers, including Justin Verlander, and outlasted the rain in a 14-6 win (box score/wrap).

There was a lot of offense to report from last night.  The top 4 hitters in the Mets line up all had at least 3 hits each and an RBI.  In fact, the only starting position player without a hit or RBI or run scored was Rod Barajas, who has quietly slipped back down to a .246 batting average for the year. 

Here are some specifics on the offense explosion the Mets experience last night: Reyes went 3-6 with an RBI and 3 runs scored, Wright went 3-3 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, Davis went 3-6 with 3 RBI and 1 run scored.  But the biggest bat last night was Angel Pagan who went 4-6 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored, and was only a homer away from the cycle.  And Reyes, Francoeur and Bay all swiped bases as well.

Niese pitched well for the first 3 innings, but then the rain came and washed away his good start.  Jerry decided to leave Niese out there after nearly an hour rain delay and it was pretty obvious that affected Niese.  But after Niese gave up 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings the bullpen only allowed one hit for the rest of the game, which is nice to see, especially considering the concern over the bullpen not having Mejia anymore.  At least tonight, that wasn't an issue...

But what might become an issue is Beltran making rehab starts beginning Thursday as reported by Metsblog, here.  I mean, Pagan is playing well, obviously.  Francoeur is also playing pretty well himself, so between the two of them Bay and Beltran the Mets will have quite a glut in the outfield.  This will be worth monitoring...especially considering the timing of Beltran's return and the way it may match up with the trade deadline...

Anywho...the Mets take on the Tigers in the second game of this three game set tonight with Dickey facing off against Jeremy Bonderman...

Mets Clinch Winning Road Trip, Beat Indians 8-4

Tonight the Mets clinched a winning road trip after beating the Indians 8-4 (box score) tonight in Cleveland.

For the third consecutive night the Mets put up a five run inning...wow.  This team is beyond hot right now, no matter how bad their opponents have been on this road trip.  The Mets pounded out 14 hits tonight, including 7 doubles.  Everything the Mets hit found the gap, which is fantastic, although some of that may be attributed to the Indians having Austin Kearns in CF and Shelly Duncan in LF...but still...finding the gaps.

Pagan went 3-5 with 3 RBI and Wright had 2 RBI while Bay, Davis and Francoeur all drove in runs as well.  Oh, and by the way, Frenchy had two more hits and is now back up to .275 on the season.  I'm just sayin'...

On the hill Niese was good in his first outing against his boyhood team.  Niese went 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out three.  Mejia came in after Niese in the eighth and made things interesting by walking the first two batter he faced, which prompted Jerry to go get Elmer Dessens.  Dessens immediately walked the next batter to load the bases, but settled down and only gave up one run, and finished the last two innings to sew up the win for the Mets.

One more thing...Ruben Tejada is a good second basemen and can turn double plays VERY well.  I do not miss Cashstealo at all...

Tomorrow the Mets go for the sweep against the Indians behind Dickey who will face Jake Westbrook at 7:05.  This would be the second time in as many series as the Mets will get a close look at potential starters they could trade for.  Last weekend they roughed up Millwood, but what will they do against Westbrook...Tune in tomorrow to find out.

Tejada is back in the line up, which I like, along with Jerry keeping Carter in there.  Hopefully Carter will hit a bit more tonight, and can lock himself up for another start tomorrow, and potentially the Yankee series...

Carter certainly owes the Yankees a bit of payback for them claiming him on waivers and ultimately blocking his trade to the Mets last year. That ended up being important because it took away what would have been some valuable playing time on the major league level with the Mets for Carter last season.  Nothing would be sweeter than seeing Carter get a chance to get a little revenge on the Yankees...

Mets Looking Into Lee, Should Make BEST Move

According to Matt Cerrone of Metsblog, here, the Mets and Mariners are talking Cliff Lee.  Cerrone says the Mets and Mariners are talking "quite a lot" about Lee, but the Mariners seem intent on getting Jon Niese back in any deal.  Cerrone also states that people within the Mets organization think they have the prospects to get Lee, but Omar looks like he's not willing to include Niese in that deal.

I agree with Omar.  Obviously, I would want Lee too, but not at the cost of Niese.  If the Mets were to obtain Lee without giving up Niese, they would be looking at a rotation that includes at least 3 lefties, which would be a nice thing to be able to roll out in a series against the Phillies and Braves, who both have some heavy-hitting lefties (Utley, Howard, Ibanez-Philly and Heyward, McCann - Braves).  That would be a nice rotation and would really put the Mets in a position to do some damage down the stretch, especially considering the success that Lee had with the Phillies last season after the trade deadline.  

I am interested in exactly how much the Mets would have to give up to get Lee and then, on top of that, how much they would need to sign him for in the offseason.  Because IF the report that Oswalt would be willing to come to NY is true, then I think moving for Oswalt might be the better deal.  It seems like the prospect return for Oswalt will not be as much as the return for Lee, because of the report that the Astros are looking more for salary relief.  So, to me, if the Mets have the choice of Lee, without an extention or getting Oswalt for another 3 years at $10 million each at a lesser price to your farm system, then I would do what allows you to keep your more valuable asset, prospects.

Either way, Lee or Oswalt would be a great addition to the Mets.  And I don't think the gap between these two pitchers is big enough to warrant paying a heavier price for one over the another.  Both players have pitched in World Series and both have the ability to shut teams down.  The Mets could use another big time pitcher in their rotation, and either player would be an upgrade.  I just hope they make the move that gets them the most, while giving up the least...

Mets Improve Roster, Niese Returns to Beat Fish 6-1

In order to bring back Jon Niese from the DL the Mets needed to make a roster move, so they put Oliver Perez on the DL with knee problems.  I don't care what they do to get rid of him, I'll just happy he's inactive.  So now, after moving Cashstealo and Perez to the DL, along with the release of Matthews Jr, the Mets seem to have finally heard what everyone else has been saying and have improved their team by eliminating some of their "dead weight".  This something I had been hoping the Mets would do for some time now, and finally the team has come to their senses.  Matt Cerrone of Metsblog agrees and makes that same point in this post.

Meanwhile...

Yesterday afternoon Jon Niese returned to the mound after a hamstring injury and lead the Mets to a 6-1 victory over the Marlins (box score/wrap).

Niese was great going 7 innings giving up only 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 6.  He looked good, and most importantly, healthy while keeping the Marlins at bay.  Although it does help when you get some good run support...

Niese's run support was not a problem yesterday as David Wright drove in three runs (including a homer) and scored two runs on his own.  Tejada, Francoeur and Davis all drove in a runs, with Davis going 4-4 and scoring 3 runs as well.

The team hit well, pitched well, and it led to a victory.  But don't they always do that at home...ugh...a topic for another day.

Today the Mets go for the sweep, sending Takahashi to the hill against Ricky Nolasco for the fish.  The game is at 1:10 on PIX11...

Mets Make Roster Moves: My Reactions

I need to address the roster moves the Mets made today.  I would have gotten to these moves earlier had my job not gotten in the way...

So, first thing's first, the Mets FINALLY DFA'D Gary Matthews Jr.  Part of me feels bad for Matthews because he seemed like a good teammate, unfortunately for him he's a terrible player and that's more important.  Now that I showed a little mercy, here it comes...about time.  Matthews was awful and was only really on the team because Jerry was afraid of not having a back up centerfielder.  So instead of calling up Jesus Feliciano, who's hitting close to .400 in Triple-A and plays centerfield, the organization decided to bring up Omir Santos because Blanco is hurting...

Let's stop right there...WHAT?

GMJ being the only guy on the roster capable of playing center fielder was the excuse that kept him around as long as he did, right?  So, when the Mets finally decided "enough was enough" with GMJ, they decided to bring up a catcher?  Is anyone as confused as I am?  I get that Blanco is banged up, but when Blanco was on the bereavement list a week or two ago Barajas played all the time, and Thole was useless.  So what is different now?  Why can't Barajas carry the load again?  If it's because Blanco is THAT hurt, why doesn't he go to the DL?  I am baffled.  The best part of this whole thing is that Jerry now says that Bay can play centerfield if need be.  Where has this been all year?

Before I get to Cashstealo, which I feel was a no-brainer decision, I want to look at Niese being activated tomorrow and try to figure out who gets sent down...

In this article, I mentioned earlier from Metsblog, there is potential for Mejia to be the guy sent down should Perez continue to refuse to take a minor league assignment.  This brings up a few things...

First, while I'd like it to be Mejia who is sent down because I want him to be a starter...I think the need to get Ollie off of the major league roster trumps the need to turn Mejia into a starter, at this point.  Especially considering how Dickey pitched tonight, and how he and Takahashi can easily transition to the bullpen.

I really hope it's going to be Ollie.  I'm not quite sure how it's going to happen, but I really think if the Mets are as frustrated as their fans are with Perez and if he doesn't accept a minor league assignment I a move should be made.  Perez is a distraction and a waste of an arm in the bullpen.  I would throw the minor league option at him one more time, or the organization should just take their lumps and admit Ollie was a bad contract.  That was tough for me to say, I still like Ollie's stuff when he's on...he just hasn't been on in a while.

Now, let's talk Cashstealo, who was playing hurt and NEEDED to go on the DL.  I mean, this guy was limping to the plate, in the field, while walking to first.  There is no doubt in my mind he's tough, and he's earned some respect from me for playing hurt (doesn't make me think he doesn't stink), but I think this was the right decision.

Looks like Ruben Tejada will get a serious look at second base.  I would love to see the kid get hot and never give up this spot, unfortunately, I really doubt that will happen.  Even if Tejada is out of his mind while Cashstealois on the DL, I just don't see the Mets not playing someone who makes $6 million.  For whatever that's worth...

Niese to DL, Dickey to Rotation

As reported by Metsblog, it seems as though Dickey will be taking Jon Niese's roster, and probably, rotation spot for the next two weeks or so.  Matt Cerrone of Metsblog points out that this will probably delay Mejia being sent down to become a starter, at least until Igarashi is able to return.

This all makes sense, as long Dickey doesn't get creamed tonight in his outing.  It'd be nice if Dickey can stick around and pitch well enough to give the Mets chances to win a few games with Niese out.  Then again, maybe I'm being too hopeful...

Mets Cruise to Eighth Straight Behind Niese and Extra Base Hits

Tonight at Citizens Bank Park the Mets really took it to the Phillies defeating them 9-1 (box score).  The Mets extended their winning streak to eight straight with the total package tonight, pitching, defense and hitting and really dominated a very very good team tonight.  It was fun to watch as a Mets fan.

First at the plate, the big stories were Rod Barajas and the Mets ability to get extra base hits.  Rod Barajas, as mentioned several times during the telecast by Gary Cohen, kills the ball at Citizens Bank Park and tonight was no different.  Barajas went 3-4 with two homers, with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI, and all of his hits going for extra bases.  As much as I don't like Barajas' average being as low as it is, there is no denying his power at the plate, and it was on display tonight.  If Barajas continues to hit around .200 all season but drills the Phils the way he did tonight, I'll take it.  As far as extra base hits, 8 of the team's 10 hits went for extra bags...unreal.  Also, Francoeur and Wright both went deep for the Mets, and Wright is starting to heat up and it's nice to see.

On the hill, Niese was awesome.  He went 7 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits, while striking out seven and walking only one.  He had the Phillies off balance all night, especially Howard who looked bad at the plate outside of one line out to center that he made some nice contact on.  I would have to say I am now officially confident in Niese, he looked great.

Most importantly, tonight my man-crush on Francoeur went to astronomical heights.  He was awesome tonight.  Frenchy golfed a homer into the left field seats, and played fantastic defense while showing everyone how big his balls are.  Frenchy crashed into the wall in right while making a great play to rob Ibanez of a hit.  Later in the game he was plunked by Danys Baez, and not only did he stay in the game, but he immediately swiped a bag to really stick it to Baez.  But of all the things Frenchy did tonight, his turn and fire in the corner of a Werth hit to hold Jayson to a single was my favorite play of the game.  Frenchy cut a ball off heading to the corner and planted one foot and fired a rocket to the second base bag.  It was such a nice play, that Werth actually fell putting the breaks on when he decided to stay at first.  Jason Bay also made a pretty nice grab on a shot from Victorino.  Great stuff.  Frenchy, however, was taken out of the game eventually because of the beating he took tonight, and in the post game Jerry said he'd probably be out tomorrow, which I get.
